The Lightning Thief Review| So much better than I thought (and the movie) discussion.

Rating
As you may know if you read my other posts, I haven’t read the Percy Jackson series yet and I wanted to read it for a long time now. Well, guess what? I read it!!!! And wow! It surprised me so much because I watched the movie before reading the book (which now, I’m ashamed of and I understand why the fans were saying it is not a good book to movie adaptation) But I read the book guys! I read it! Now let’s discuss about it, shall we?

**This review contains spoilers but I will put a spoiler alert before so you won’t get spoil**

If you don’t know what it’s about, then I have a question for you. Have you been living under a rock because this book is everywhere! Nonetheless here is the summary:

and i'm yours

Percy Jackson is a good kid, but he can’t seem to focus on his schoolwork or control his temper. And lately, being away at boarding school is only getting worse—Percy could have sworn his pre-algebra teacher turned into a monster and tried to kill him. When Percy’s mom finds out, she knows it’s time that he knew the truth about where he came from, and that he go to the one place he’ll be safe. She sends Percy to Camp Half Blood, a summer camp for demigods (on Long Island), where he learns that the father he never knew is Poseidon, God of the Sea. Soon a mystery unfolds and together with his friends—one a satyr and the other the demigod daughter of Athena—Percy sets out on a quest across the United States to reach the gates of the Underworld (located in a recording studio in Hollywood) and prevent a catastrophic war between the gods.

First of all, I want to start this review by saying that I should have read the book before watching the movieThe first time I watched it, I didn’t really understand why so many people said it was bad, but now that I read the book, I understand their frustration.

This book was so entertaining and action-packed. Even when you think that the action is finished, it keeps coming and coming. Which made me at the edge of my seat from the beginning to the end. I thought that monsters were going to come out at any time.

The interactions between the characters were the best. Those characters made me crack up several times. We can see that sarcasm is very well mastered by Percy (And btw, we don’t see that in the movie). There’s something about those characters that are so fascinating. And it’s so pleasant to see that they would risk each other’s life to save their friends.

I’m so excited to read the next book!!! I’m planing on reading it really soon since I just bought the whole box-set of the series. Actually, I got it for only 18,99$, which is a good deal for 5 books. Here is where I bought them: Percy Jackson Box Set.

Book to movie adaptation: **still no spoilers**

Ok like I said before, when I first watched the movie without reading the book, I thought it was good because I didn’t know about all the parts they left out. To be honest, I completely separated the movie and the book. First of all, the characters! I don’t see the 12 year old Percy Jackson in the movie…Or maybe puberty hit him really early.

Things I didn’t like about the movie/liked about the book:

  • Even though I watched the movie first, the book still help some mysteries that I didn’t know about.
  • Some action-packed scenes were left out in the movie which made the book 100x better.
  • The characters are just not fitting.

HELLO

FavoriteScenes

It was hard to pick only one but my absolute favorite part is when Percy’s father claimed him. Remember this part? When he was playing ‘Capture the Flag’ and Clarisse wanted to hurt him and then he went into the water and got strength. After, a little trident was on his head and everyone bowed!!!! It was such a moving scene!

Parts I have to talk about

  • Percy’s first fight with a monster (in a museum containing myths about the gods, now that’s something)
  • His mother’s “death”. It was really moving how Percy loves his mother so much and how his mother too would do anything for him (even marry smelly Gabe)
  • The first thing Annabeth told Percy: “You drool when you sleep”
  • When Percy used his power to stop Clarisse from putting his head in the toilet bowl
  • Capture the flag game
  • Going on the quest
  • The epic fight with Medusa and he background story about why she hates Annabeth (which by the way wasn’t in the movie, just saying)
  • When Percy jumped off a 300 feet building (was it 300 feet? I don’t really know for sure)
  • Percy and Annabeth going to the triangle of love (*wink*)
  • How Annabeth and Grover were ready to stay in the underwourld to save Percy and his mom.
  • Percy’s and Ares’ fight
  • His “talk” with his father: Although I’m not sure it was the most pleasant thing…
  • How his mom stood up for herself and….created some statues. *smiling broadly*

  1. The only hint of sarcasm in the movie was when he said, “This is a pen.” 😂 But then again, it’s Logan Lerman so I love him. Hahaha. The books are way better than the movies, because they really got a lot of things wrong in the movie. So glad to hear your thoughts. Welcome aboard the Camp Half-Blood train, fellow demigod!
