Books that made it past the Second Book Syndrome| My favorite sequels!

Stockholm

Today, we are going to be discussing about a serious issue in the young adult world of books!

As you may know, a lot of books in the YA genre are trilogies or more and it is very rare to have standalones. Now, I’m not complaining about not having standalones because to be honest, I love series. It enables the characters to grow up and you get to be with them longer, but the issue I want to talk about here is THE SECOND BOOK SYNDROME!!!!!!!!!

The second book syndrome is when someone is reading a series with three books or more and they absolutely LOVED the first book, but somehow the second book just let them down.

The main reason why most second books disappoint us:

We expect too much. Since we absolutely loved the first book, we have certain expectations for the next one and when it isn’t as good as we thought it, it just disappoints us.

Here is a list of my favorite sequels:

*This list is in no particular order*

1. Catching Fire (The Hunger Games series)

I absolutely loved the first book in this series, but I have to admit that the second book is my absolute favorite in the whole series. With Katniss’s and Peeta’s relationship already going and the apparition of Finnick. What can a girl more in a second book? But seriously, it was so action-packed and amazingly good.

2. P.s. I still love you (To all the boys I’ve loved before series)

Like Catching Fire, I loved the first book but the second book was better in my opinion. I loved how in this book Peter and Lara Jean were doing everything for real now and not just acting in front of everybody. I’m so excited for the third book!!!!

3. Scarlet (The Lunar Chronicles)

So to be honest (I might get a lot of hate for this), I didn’t love Cinder. I didn’t hate it either. I just didn’t know why there were so much hype around this series and Cinder kind of disappointed me. But I continued the series and have to say that Scarlet was so much better than the first one. Unfortunately, I haven’t read the rest of the series yet, but I’ll get to it soon.

4. A COURT OF MIST AND FURY!!!!! (A court of thorns and roses series)

What? Did you think I would forget my baby for this list? I’ve been talking about this book ever since I read it and I’m so not ashamed. This is one of the best books I have ever read, ever!! Sarah J. Maas is amazing. I think I have mentioned that in like practically most of my posts, but I just love her work so much. ALSO, ACOTAR IS MY FAVORITE SEUQLE OF ALL TIME!!!!!

5. Crown of Midnight (Throne of glass series)

Again, not ashamed!! Seriously, I love Sarah J. Maas. You guys must be so tired of all my posts about her series, but READ THEM!!!!! Throne of Glass was really good but Crown of Midnight went over the roof! I did not expect that the story would expand to so much more. After this book, the possibilities of what might happen just opened up. Fantastic!

6. Prodigy (Legend series)

I wasn’t absolutely in love of the first book because I didn’t really like June. But in this book, OH GOD!! I SHIP THIS SO MUCH!!!! Not only that, this book was action-packed. I never got bored and read it in a single sitting!! Can’t wait to read the last one but I’m also scare of finishing this series.

So here are my favorite sequels that didn’t suffer of the second book syndrome!

What are yours? Have you read any of those and what did you think about it?

  1. Catching Fire is such an amazing book! I haven’t read the P.S I still love you series, but I’ve heard such great reviews. I can’t wait to get started on them. I feel like sequels are hard to love, but I love your selection 🙂
